In the present paper, we show the experimental measurement of the growth of a microbubble created on the tip of a single mode optical fiber, in which zinc nanoparticles were photodeposited on its core by using a single laser source to carry out both the generation of the microbubble by photothermal effect and the monitoring of the microbubble diameter. The photodeposition technique, as well as the formation of the microbubble, was carried out by using a single-mode pigtailed laser diode with emission at a wavelength of 658 nm. The microbubble’s growth was analyzed in the time domain by the analysis of the Fabry–Perot cavity, whose diameter was calculated with the number of interference fringes visualized in an oscilloscope. The results obtained with this technique were compared with images obtained from a CCD camera, in order to verify the diameter of the microbubble. Therefore, by counting the interference fringes, it was possible to quantify the temporal evolution of the microbubble. As a practical demonstration, we proposed a vibrometer sensor using microbubbles with sizes of 83 and 175 μm as a Fabry–Perot cavity; through the time period of a full oscillation cycle of an interferogram observed in the oscilloscope, it was possible to know the frequency vibration (500 and 1500 Hz) for a cuvette where the microbubble was created....
The TiSe2 nanosheets were prepared by means of ultrasound-assisted liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) and the nonlinear saturable absorption properties were experimentally investigated. The modulation depth, saturation intensity and nonsaturable absorbance of the prepared 1T-TiSe2 SA were 15.7%, 1.28 MW/cm2 and 8.2%, respectively. Taking advantage of the saturable absorption properties of TiSe2-based SA, a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser was systematically demonstrated. The pulse repetition rates varied from 24.50 kHz up to 73.79 kHz with the increasing pump power. The obtained shortest pulse width was 1.31 μs with pulse energy of 79.28 nJ. The system presented merits of low-cost SA preparation, system compactness, superb stability and high competition....
In this paper, we propose to use glass optical fibers with a rectangular cross-section for the application in a concentrator photovoltaic and daylighting system (CPVD) due to the unique characteristics of rectangular fibers with the capability to provide a uniform rectangular beam shape and a top-hat profile at the output. A mathematical model of rectangular optical fibers has been formulated in this study for different incident angles, and the results are compared with those of round optical fibers. Furthermore, the performance of the bundle of RGOFs is compared with that of the bundle of round optical fibers via simulation by using the ray-tracing method. The mathematical modelling and numerical simulation have demonstrated that the RGOF has advantages in terms of the improvement in relative transmission and reduction in energy leakage for the transmission through the optical fiber. The simulation result also shows that a higher flux of sunlight can be transmitted via the bundle of RGOFs as compared to the bundle of round optical fibers due to the higher coupling efficiency. The experiment results on the relative transmission in different incident angles for both round optical fibers and RGOFs have validated both the simulation and the mathematical modelling. The beam profile of our fabricated RGOF has also been measured via our laboratory facility. The flexibility test on the fabricated RGOF has been carried out to bend at a radius of 150 mm and twist at 90° at a fiber length of 2.2 m....
In the process of human behavior recognition, the traditional dense optical flow method has too many pixels and too much overhead, which limits the running speed. This paper proposed a method combing YOLOv3 (You Only Look Once v3) and local optical flow method. Based on the dense optical flow method, the optical flow modulus of the area where the human target is detected is calculated to reduce the amount of computation and save the cost in terms of time. And then, a threshold value is set to complete the human behavior identification. Through design algorithm, experimental verification and other steps, the walking, running and falling state of human body in real life indoor sports video was identified. Experimental results show that this algorithm is more advantageous for jogging behavior recognition....
The FBG (Fiber Bragg grating) sensor is an optical fiber type strain sensor. When a person breathes, strain occurs in the lungs and diaphragm. This was verified using an FBG sensor to which part of the living body this respiratory strain propagates. When measured in the abdomen, the signal waveforms were significantly different between breathing and apnea. The respiratory cycle measured by the temperature sensor attached to the mask and the strain cycle measured by the FBG sensor almost matched. Respiratory strain was measured in the abdomen, chest, and shoulder, and the signal amplitude decreased with distance from the abdomen. In addition, the respiratory rate could be calculated from the measured strain signal. On the other hand, respiratory strain did not propagate to the elbows and wrists, which were off the trunk, and the respiratory time, based on the signal period, could not be calculated at these parts. Therefore, it was shown that respiratory strain propagated in the trunk from the abdomen to the shoulder, but not in the peripheral parts of the elbow and wrist....
